Chalka Chalka Re vs. Yaaro Yaarodi

I'm much more of a Hindi film fan than I am of any of the southern industries, so generally when it comes to Bollywood films that have counterparts in other languages I only ever bother to watch the Hindi.  I added Saathiya to my collection last winter and just picked up Alaipayuthey this week.  I haven't watched Alaipayuthey yet (there's never time!) but I did take a few minutes to check out Yaaro Yaarodi, the Tamil original of one of my all time favorite songs, Chalka Chalka Re.

I don't think Yaaro Yaarodi holds up to Chalka Chalka Re--I've gotten used to the pace of the Hindi version and the original seems too fast and a bit jumbled.  My favorite line of any song in the world, "Baabula chhoda tera anganaara," got sort of lost in Yaaro Yaarodi.  Hrmph.

So which video is your favorite?  It's actually a close call for me...I prefer Maddy over Vivek but Chalka Chalka Re wins for me because Rani is just so cute!

Oh Yaaro Yaarodi wins by FAR for me. I love how natural Shalini is, and in general, ARR's songs are written FOR the tamil language, so the Hindi translations/dubs always sound awkward to me ... like they are trying to fit too many syllables in. It's not my favorite song from Alaipayuthe (that would definitely be Pachai Nirame), but I do feel that the original wins for me. :-)

That being said, I heard the original first. A lot of times, the language you hear the songs in first sounds more "right" ...

I think you're right...I heard Kannalanae before I heard Kehna Hi Kya and I sort of prefer the Tamil (though I have an easier time singing the Hindi). It sounds right, as you say.

It worked the opposite for me with Hindustani (Hindi) vs. Indian (Tamil) - the one with Kamal Hassan, Manisha Koirala and Urmila. Urmila's big song 'Latka Dikha Diya' works so much more for me than the Tamil one, but only because I heard it first. But then 'Telephone Mani Pol' is SOOOO much better in Tamil, I can't stand the Hindi one. Weird.
